Originals & Reproductions

The Story:

The 1905 Wright Flyer III was the first "practical" airplane—an airplane that could take off in a wide range of weather environments, navigate to a predetermined location, and land "without crashing," as Wilbur so succinctly put it. It was also the first airplane with independent controls for each axis. In the 1902 glider and the 1903 Flyer, the Wright brothers had "coupled" the wind-warping with the rudder so that both were activated by the same control. In the Flyer III, the rudder and the elevator had separate controls which aided the pilot's ability to maneuver the airplane.

This is not just a replica or static model. We don't just build them, we conducted an expedition in experimental archaeology, test-flying each aircraft and repeating the flight experiments of the Wright brothers. In doing so, we gained a deep, personal understanding of the events that led up to the construction of the 1905 Wright Flyer III replica.
